Whistler Events December 2014

It’s hard to believe that opening day for the slopes of Whistler Blackcomb is almost here. While “ski season” is enough to beckon hoards of snow-sport enthusiasts to our resort village in December, there is also a full slate of events to keep you all entertained on and off the hills. Our Whistler Village restaurant once again serves as your curator of information on highly recommended leisurely ongoings in the community. In a week or so we will deliver more Holiday specific recommendations so if it seems we’ve skipped a few of your Christmas favorites, fret not, and check back here soon for intel on the whereabouts of Santo Clós  and the like. Until then, read further to find out what  and where  you and your party will want to see and be seen this coming month in our resort town.

Top Five Recommendations for Events in Whistler Village (and Area) for December 2014

1. Whistler Film Festival – Various Locations (Dec 3 – 7/ 2014)

The annual Whistler Film Festival is one of the most exciting events of the year. In fact, considering the backdrop of our ski resort community and the unique films on deck many declare this to be their favorite film festival event in the world. Four venues will host the cinematographic affair, including the Whistler Conference Centre, Rainbow Theatre, Millennium Place, Squamish Lil’Wat Cultural Centre (located outside of Whistler in Squamish) and everyone’s favorite place to catch a movie in town – Village 8 Cinemas. Guests are often surprised at the film screening facilities in Whistler, which is yet another part of what has made us the number one ski resort in North America. This year the WFF has a schedule of films ranging from thrillers to ski-flicks and a film about a magic goldfish to a Kim Cattrall Tribute (no, not Cougar Town). With nearly a hundred films being screened there is something for everyone at this December’s Whistler Film Festival. Click here for the complete lineup and schedule.

2. Westin Resort & Spa Christmas Breakfast Food and Toy Drive (Dec 3/2014, 6AM to 9AM)

While we’re saving the more Christmas-themed event goodies for next week’s blog post we of course cannot hold back our endorsement for the Christmas Breakfast Food and Toy Drive at the Westin Resort, hosted in part by local radio station Mountain FM. Get an early start on your December 3rd day by dropping off a new toy, non-perishable food item, or cash donation in support of those in need residing within the Sea to Sky Corridor. For your goodwill you’ll not only earn some good karma you’ll be treated to a free and absolutely delectable breakfast. Bring your entire party, do some good, take some holiday photos against the backdrop of the luxurious hotel, and head out for the day feeling great. We can think of a better way to spend one December “dawn patrol” before hitting the slopes.

3. Skiing Under the Influence Art Exhibit @ Millennium Place (Dec 12 – Jan 7/2015)

We can’t put together an event recommendation list for December without adding a little culture to the mix. The art vibe in Whistler is big, very big. And because of its location, you’ll often find exhibits that speak to the ski and snowboarding scene. It’s (skiing and snowboarding) what people come here for at this time of the year and the culture spills over into the arts community as organically as can be. Guests arrive from all over the world and want to bring home a piece of the mountain with them. Since packing snow into your suitcases as a souvenir isn’t very practical, why not return to your place of residence with an exquisite work from one of the community’s talented artisans? Even if you’re not curating such things at the time we encourage you to come on over to Millennium Place starting Friday December 12th to browse and support the artists of Whistler, celebrating their unique takes on the ski and snowboard scene of the region.

4. Fire & Ice Show @ Skier’s Plaza Whistler Village (Sundays starting Dec 14/2014, 7 PM)

The Fire & Ice show is a spectacle that all-ages eagerly anticipate with each passing ski season in Whistler. Starting on December 14th (2014) and running every Sunday through to March 29th of 2015 (leaving you with three of these events in December) attendees will witness Whistler’s premiere skiers and board riders elevate, twist, turn, and flip through a blazing ring of fire, accented by fire-spinners for good measure. In addition to the snowy acrobatics there will be a DJ on rotation and an exciting fireworks display to cap it all off. Skier’s Plaza is practically located in front of our Whistler Village restaurant so if you prefer to enjoy the outside glow of the Fire & Ice event from the comforts of a cozier atmosphere (complete with great food and inspiring beverages) we welcome you to come on by.

5. Family Après @ Whistler Olympic Plaza (Starting Dec 22/2014, 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM)

Our last Whistler restaurant blog post detailed the best apres ski scene in the village but if you’re looking for something geared a bit more to the little ones in your life this is it. Starting December 22 and running Mondays and Wednesdays (excluding Dec 31/2014) the decoratively lit Whistler Olympic Plaza hosts what is known as Family Après. This children-friendly affair is ripe with family activities and entertainment, including outdoor ice skating. This event is perfect for kids, and the kids at heart!

We hope the above recommendations serve you well in your time up at Whistler this season. Once again, we remind and welcome you and your party to wander on up to our restaurant on the second floor of the Sundial Hotel in the heart of the Village. There could be no better way to start and/or conclude your experience at any of the events suggested here today.

Stay tuned until next week when we deliver our more Holiday-focused event recommendations.
